Artist-in-Residence: Anhar Salem

Studio 1

Anhar Salem was the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Slavs and Tatars in Berlin, summer 2022, awarded annually through an Art Jameel / Goethe-Institut, Saudi Arabia collaboration; she is now working here on developing new works exploring how markets and bodies navigate borders by documenting commodities, packaging and the public/private spheres in Jeddah.

Studios 2 & 3 are currently home to artists participating in the Hayy Arts level 1 exhibition: Alia Ahmad, Abdulmohsen Albin Ali, Mohammad Alfaraj, Badr Ali, Zahra Bundakji, Bashaer Hawsawi and Alaa Tarabzouni and Fahad Bin Naif .

Artist-in-Residence: Filwa Nazer

As part of her contribution to our upcoming exhibition ‘The Distance from Here’, Jeddah-based multimedia artist Filwa Nazer will be occupying Hayy Studios 1. Her residency will include an engaging public programme which invites members of the community to consider experiences of body and space within the context of ongoing changes.

Participatory Project: ‘A Menu and Its Leftovers: Finding the Voices in Jeddah’s Food Histories’

Food researcher Salma Serry leads a series of workshops looking at the unique voice of Jeddah’s food culture as materialised in family recipes, generational cookbooks and ephemera, as well as the collective cultural appreciation for the act and ritual of convening and cooking.

Workshop Series: ‘This is an Edible Gold’

Initiated by artist Moza Almatrooshi and designed and facilitated by Hayy Learning and Beeways, ‘This is an Edible Gold’ is a workshop series offering an interdisciplinary insight into the rich lives of bees, touching on topics ranging from historical and cultural encounters with bees to pollination and the importance of bees in maintaining ecosystems on a local and global level.

A collaboration between Art Jameel and the Goethe Institute, Saudi Arabia, ‘The Hospitable Ear’ is an extended workshop led by artist Julia Tiekke, working with urban strategist Zainab Ali Reza, exploring the local soundscapes of Jeddah and the competing rhythms of its sprawling and fast-developing neighborhoods.

‘Paused Mirror: The Saudi Artists’ by Osama Esid

The Darkroom

Photographer Osama Esid has created a portraiture series focusing on artists based in Saudi and integral to its creative community, developed via a collaborative journey, setting up field studios in and around Riyadh, the Eastern Province and Jeddah. The project is a continuation of Osama’s “wet plate collodion” portraits and landscapes.
