The second exhibition at Hayy Arts brings works drawn largely from the Art Jameel Collection, on view for the first time in Saudi Arabia. The Distance from Here’ is a group exhibition that focusses on spaces of transition, both physical and non-physical, exploring the ‘in-between’ shifts and exchanges and capturing the interstices of time in a moment of transformation for life and the arts in the Kingdom.
‘The Distance from Here’ features several new commissions alongside existing works by around 20 local and international artists that cover a wide ground, drawing on personal understandings of isolation, movement, boundaries, displacement, confinement and waiting. The artists include Mona Ayyash (with Inês de Almeida, Olivia Duncan, Mohammad El-Jachi, Shamma Khoory and Altamash Urooj), Yto Barrada, Hicham Benohoud, Sarah Brahim, Jason Dodge, Shilpa Gupta, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Anup Mathew Thomas, Filwa Nazer, Sreshta Rit Premnath, Hrair Sarkissian and Do Ho Suh.
Accompanied by a robust public programme, The ‘Distance from Here’ sees a roster of films programmed by Hayy Cinema, alongside a series of workshops and talks. The exhibition includes a newly-commissioned interactive, performative work by Sarah Brahim, while Filwa Nazer is in-residence at Hayy Studios for the duration of (and as part of) the exhibition.
A publication featuring newly commissioned texts accompanies the exhibition, and is produced in collaboration with the Art Jameel Library and includes essays by Nadine Ghandour, Mihir Wairkar, and an illustrated essay by Son Ni.
A previous iteration of this exhibition took place at Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai (September 8, 2021 – January 23, 2022)
About the Art Jameel Collection
The evolving Art Jameel Collection sits at the heart of Art Jameel’s programme, and documents and presents important work by local, regional and international artists, including some of the earliest artists who’ve established their practice in and about Saudi Arabia. The Collection is a site of research, exploring the nature and responsibility of museum collections, aiming to question the very act and purpose of collecting.
