Tactile surfaces

Following a global architectural competition launched by Art Jameel in 2019, an international jury selected the Jeddah-based architecture studio Bricklab‘s design for Jeddah’s first independent cinema. Bricklab’s proposal embraces Art Jameel’s intent: for a multi-functional, public-facing centre within Hayy that functions both as a neighbourhood cinema and community space; attracts film enthusiasts of all ages, and becomes a home for the audio-visual community of Jeddah and Saudi Arabia.

In anticipation of the upcoming opening of Hayy Cinema in fall 2022,  Bricklab’s three-part installation brings together objects, models and videos, on display to experiment their architectural approach. The installation is based on the body of work produced during the three-year design and research process, focusing on the role of cinema in the social and cultural development of the local community. Two models are interactive, and we invite Hayy Jameel visitors to touch, play and experiment with the pieces and their materiality.
