Presented by Ashraf Abdullah, the previous winner of Hayy Jameel’s Facade Commission, Public Surfaces is a programme that examines visual practices in public space, focusing on the wall as a surface that carries the mark, the street as a context of production and reception, and the mark as an unauthorized trace that forms outside advertising and institutional methods.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understanding city tagging as a spatial and cultural practice. 
  2. Understanding city tagging’s historical roots and its multiple roles.
  3. Introduction to understanding the relationship between the individual and space.
  4. How to create collaborative art through dialogue.
  5. How to develop and execute an idea and initial sketch into material output.
  6. Using different tagging techniques and art mediums to express individualities.
  7. Forms of marking/coding, and how these can be translated into tools. of repetition such as stickers and stencil plates.


Final outcome:
A personal tag that reflects the messages the participant wants to send to the city, and a shared collaborative wall tagged by participants to be displayed in outdoor space.

 

Ashraf Abdullah
Born in 1997 and of Afghan origin, Ashraf is an artist residing in Saudi Arabia who is known for his passion for graffiti. This passion emerged at an early age through his exposure to diverse types of Arabic typography in the streets of his community. This deep connection with Arabic typography and lettering underpins his practice.
