Calling all those interested in Saudi subcultures, sound and cultural studies
Join us for a lecture and listening session titled “Memories of Poor Sounds’’ which follows Fai Ahmed’s practice into the circulation of local music in low production, part of her residency programme with Slavs and Tatars in collaboration with Art Jameel and Goethe-Institut Saudi Arabia.
Fai will talk about her new research project, exploring the realm of the local underground music scene and its intricate ties to cultural memory and hauntology. Through oral history and tape recordings, listen and learn about unconventional melodies that were considered rebellious and intolerable in the region and went on to shape pop subculture, challenge norms, and lead to the evolution of underground music production.
This event is free and open to all. RSVP is required due to limited seating.
About
Fai Ahmed is the current recipient of the in-practice residency with Slavs and Tatars in collaboration with Art Jameel and Goethe-Institut Saudi Arabia. Her work focuses on the politics of memory and the aesthetics of digital error. Each of her works sits at the juncture of two entirely different explorations: the exploration of ideas and the exploration of the process of artistic creation. She published her first art book in 2020, titled “Untitled Album,” and she has exhibited at numerous local and international exhibitions, most notably in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and NYC.
