In this interactive teach-in, participants will learn about the discipline of anthropology and, specifically, the study of Islam and Muslims within it. We will examine the Orientalist biases that plagued the field and explore Talal Asad’s foundational interventions that have radically transformed the study of Islam and Muslims in anthropology and beyond.
About Nesrien Hamid
Nesrien Hamid is an anthropology PhD Candidate at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She received her MA in Middle Eastern Studies from The Graduate Center at the City University of New York and BA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation focuses on Hajj and Umrah, examining their transformations in the 21st century, specifically the intersection of each ritual and ethics and history and spirituality.
