Hayy Sounds presents the first of many listening sessions, in collaboration with Frequency Room, as part of the closing programme of the exhibition ‘Red Wind, Coral Worlds’.

Join us for an intimate evening that introduces the listening stations with a playlist of curated albums, archival research and narratives that offers a shared space for close listening to the sonic practices, histories and traditions traversing the Red Sea and its neighbouring region.

In conversation with Atiyyah Khan and Huda Tayob, this hybrid (online and in-person) event unfolds as part-conversation part-listening to Rotations of Bismillah, a sonic zine mix which traces sufi sonics, field recordings, songs of praise and joy across the African continent including music from Gabon, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Niger, Guinea, Gambia and more.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the exhibition, located on the first floor of Hayy Arts, before spending time at the listening stations to reflect on the vast sonic practices, cross-border circulation and cultural connections that carry traces and residues of places and pasts. 

The event is free and open to all, with specific interest for sound artists, researchers, producers, academia,  writers, curators and creatives interested in sonic practices, musical histories and oral traditions across the Red Sea and beyond.
