This workshop invites young creatives to explore the cultural, spiritual, and communal significance of water through the story of Zamzam and the long-standing tradition of charitable water fountains across Jeddah—especially within the historic district of Al-Balad.

  • We begin with a traditional floor-seated storytelling circle, reflecting on the deep relationship between water, generosity, and community heritage. The narrative highlights the traditional use of earthenware vessels, which naturally cooled water in Jeddah’s hot climate and played an essential role in daily life. These vessels even inspired the naming of Al-Balad’s iconic wooden lattice windows—known as Mashrabiya or Roshan—a reminder of how water shaped the architecture and social rhythms of the city.
  • Participants will then move to a hands-on workstation where they will decorate their own pre-thrown earthenware vessel. Using carving tools and stamps made from or inspired by textures, motifs, and materials found in Al-Balad, each participant will create a personal piece that connects them to Jeddah’s cultural landscape and long-standing traditions around water.

My Mini Roshan

My Mini Roshan is a creative youth workshop inspired by Jeddah’s historic Al-Balad architecture. Participants begin with an engaging story circle exploring the Roshan—its role as a clever ventilation device for homes and traditional water vessels, and its cultural function as a hidden gathering space where neighbors exchanged stories, news, and connection.

Students then build their own miniature diorama box with a lid featuring Roshan-inspired patterns, crafting a personal living space that tells their unique story. Using mini figurines, traditional textiles, and wooden details inspired by Al-Balad, participants create a small world where heritage meets imagination.

Fun, artistic, and meaningful—this workshop brings Jeddah’s history to life while empowering youth to share their own narratives.
