The cities we live in are ever changing and things around us are continuously in motion, from cars to pedestrians to the ever growing skylines. This thematic programme at Explorers is inspired by the Hayy Arts exhibition, ‘We saw an endless cycle’ – curated by Rotana Shaker, and it invites us to see and experience cities from new viewpoints and vantages. Unfolding over three months, the programme encourages young people to notice, document, and express the spaces they live in and the built environment through illustration, painting, recording, collective making, and performance. Starting from a zoomed out view, we look at how cities form, develop, and grow and then look closely at how elements around our cities shape communities and the way we live.
This programme features installations that inform and allow kids to also interact and add their own personal touches to the space. Graffiti artist, The Azee, expresses characteristic elements of Jeddah in his mural installation that greets one as they enter the space, Nawartuna – Welcome! Building on Lubna Chowdhary’s Metropolis showcased in the Hayy Arts exhibition, participants create their own version of an Explorers town, adding to a growing Mini Metropolis. A skyscraper activates the drawing area and through participation, children create scenes within windows, offering new perspectives into their myriad worlds. The open-making area takes inspiration from the open-air public sculptures sprawling throughout the city. Each month we look at the roundabouts and create our own mini models using sculpting and mixed media techniques. Join us as we study the built environment and find new ways of observing, mapping, and sharing! Monthly Breakdown:
