On Uploading Memory with Jawa El-Khash

Last April, Hayy Jameel presented a workshop titled Uploading Memory at Hayy Makers. This workshop was part of the public programme aligned with Art Jameel’s exhibition with the V&A Museum, ‘Jameel Prize: Moving Images’, and was led by artist and Jameel Prize finalist Jawa El-Khash.
Designed for beginners and creative practitioners across various disciplines, this introductory workshop guided participants through the creation of immersive 3D environments using the Unity gaming engine. The programme aimed to articulate the intimacy of distant memories by extracting personal fragments and translating them into tangible, visual objects. Recognising that memories are rarely complete, persisting instead as sensations, impressions, or partial recollections, the workshop explored 3D world-building as a storytelling medium. Participants were invited to reflect on these memories and transform them into visual forms, exploring the tension between the ephemeral nature of memory and the material presence of the object.
And at the end, let’s ask ourselves: how can experimentation between traditional and digital fabrication methods expand the horizons of artistic expression?
